Appraisal Fees
Professional personal property appraisal is a specialized service. It requires vast asset experience, formal credentials, ongoing education, access to professional-grade market databases, and the ability to defend conclusions in front of the IRS, a probate court, or opposing counsel. That expertise has a cost, as it should.
A qualified appraiser isn’t simply someone who knows what things are worth. They are trained in appraisal theory, valuation methodology, and the ethical standards that govern the profession. They are the only source of truly independent, objective, and impartial valuation, free from conflicts of interest, which is effective for situations of high consequence.
How Fees Are Calculated
Fees are quoted based on a projected hourly rate and take into account all aspects of the engagement — preparation, on-site inspection, research, report writing, and travel where applicable. You’ll receive a consultation and clear quote before any work begins.
Appraisal fees are never based on a percentage of appraised value. That arrangement is prohibited by USPAP and considered a conflict of interest.
What You’re Paying For
A professional appraisal isn’t a number on a piece of paper. It’s a documented, defensible conclusion supported by market research, comparable sales, and professional judgment, rigorously formatted to meet standards which are accepted by the IRS, estate attorneys, courts, and insurers.
The appraisal report you receive is the work product of a credentialed expert, which is grounded in facts and defensible under scrutiny. This means all reports are supported by hard evidence, and not simply casual opinions.
When an Appraisal Isn’t the Right Answer
Not every item warrants a formal appraisal. When property is unlikely to support the cost of a full appraisal report, we’ll tell you that directly, and offer instead a preliminary review. A preliminary review is a professional assessment of the item and an honest explanation of why a formal appraisal may not be in your best interest. It’s the right thing to do, and it saves you money.
